Announcements

Sunday Services Cancelled

Sunday Services for February 7, 2010 have been again cancelled due to snow. Please stay safely at home and stay warm.

Dear Friends and Family,

George Benjamins Schooler will be entering UVA Medical Center 7:00am on Monday Morning, February 1, 2010 for Electrophysiology Heart Impulse Mapping. He will then check into the Hospital for recuperation, and preparation for more extensive procedures on Wednesday.

We do not have the exact time yet Monday, but the operation is four to six hours long, with the ablations and the insertion of a Left Ventricular Assist Device in his chest and heart. Recuperation time and training for this surgery is two to four weeks in the Hospital.

I ask that all of you pray for Ben, for his Bothers and Sisters, for his Mom and Dad and friends during these big days in his life. It will be the answered prayers of all you folks that bring us, and especially Ben through these trying days.

Thank you for your anticipated prayers, and please have everyone at your churches and your families' churches and the Clergy Net, and their churches praying for us.

God bless you one and all,
Jack L. Schooler

Change of dates on surgeries:

  • Heart Mapping and catherization on Monday, Feb 1st, 2010, & AM
  • Heart Ablations on Wednesday, Feb 3rd, 8 AM
  • LVAD Implanted on Wednesday, Feb 3rd, 8 AM also.
  • 2 to 4 weeks recovery in Hospital.

Please keep Ben and our family in your prayers for this whole time period.

Thanks,
Jack and Mary

Haiti Earthquake Response

UMCOR Health Kits for Haiti

UMCOR’s two relief supply warehouses are asking United Methodists to provide health kits that can be sent to earthquake-devastated Haiti.

"For people who are feeling powerless in being able to help those in Haiti, providing health kits is a tangible way they can make an immediate difference," said Kathy Kraiza, director of UMCOR’s relief supplies. She estimates that hundreds of thousands of kits will be needed in the days and months ahead.

The kits, valued at about $12 per kit, contain everything from towels and washcloths to sterile bandages and bar soap. They will be distributed to those who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the recent disaster.

For individuals or groups that want to contribute basic necessities, UMCOR requests that the following NEW items be placed in a sealed one-gallon plastic bag.

  • 1 hand towel (15"x25" to 17"x27") - No kitchen towels
  • 1 washcloth
  • 1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
  • 1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
  • 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
  • 1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, no child-size brushes)
  • 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
  • $1.00 to purchase toothpaste
(NOTE: Toothpaste is purchased in bulk to be added to health kits to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent.)

Because the emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations and strict rules govern product entry into international countries, UMCOR requires that the kits contain only the requested items - nothing more.

Please see information below for the drop off site for health kits. (Kits will be collected on Saturday, January 30, from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon at Vision of Hope UMC on Port Republic Road in Harrisonburg. The next two dates will be the second and fourth Saturday mornings in February, the 14th and the 28th.

The Pastor challenges each of you to get together one or two of these Health Kits right away. Those that you get together this week for February 14th drop off, should be brought to our Church by Friday Night, February 13th.

Note: 64 of these Kits were taken in last Wednesday, January 27, and delivered to the pick up point at Vision of Hope UMC. The next pick up date will be Saturday, February 14th, so bring your kits in to the Church before February 13th and we will see that they get delivered.

Charity watchdog group gives UMCOR an A+ rating

The American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP), a leading charity watchdog that issues letter grade (A+ to F) ratings of nonprofit groups, has given United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) an A+ based on the portion of UMCOR's budget that goes to program services (100%) and its fund-raising efficiency. UMCOR was one of only four organizations involved in Haitian earthquake relief that were given the highest rating by AIP.

Events Schedule

Scheduling Events

There have been conflicts in scheduling events at our Church recently. It would seem that things would work best if all meetings, programs, and special events to be held at our Church were checked through a Central Calendar to be kept in the Church Office at the Parsonage in the future. Hopefully this will avoid double scheduling and possible inconveniences.
